starter/ignition on 88 turbo

Hi. My starter croaked a few weeks back so I put another one in (pita). The old one had a broken nose piece on the part that covers the gear as it hooks to the flywheel.
So, after putting the new one in I started it up and it made a clack clack clack noise. Then the wires started to smolder near the starter itself. A roasted starter.
So, I did some research and came up with the possibility that the ignition switch might be bad. And I so I put in a new ignition switch and another new starter. Upon taking out the roasted starter, I noticed that the roasted starter also had a broken nose piece.
I started the car with the new ignition switch and the new starter and it still made the clack clack noise, so I shut it off immediately.
Now I am wondering what the deal is. Is the key ignition lock bad? Is it something else like the flywheel?
Thoughts?
Thanks!!
