Yeah, you've probably got it totally figured out. But even tho you have it freed up, you may not have it freed enough to avoid future trouble.
Two fried starters is about enough, I'm sure you'll agree.
There are tips on here on how to remove the actual lock cylinder, and if yours cooperates and comes out, they suggest boiling the thing in a pan of water (honest, it succeeds in dissolving and scrubbing out old sticky gunk) and then drying it, and also rinsing out the barrel where it goes and the gear segment that transfers its action to the electric switch up forward of it.
That all should be relubed, though it's hard to get at the gear segment area. (How-tos on this site.) Lock cylinders really hadn't ought to have lube in them, locksmiths say. (oil attracts and holds dirt, and can dry out and get sticky).
Ages of old spilled beverages and doughnut crumbs etc is what accumulates and slows these things down.
A tip on how to recognize if it sticks again, and if you catch it soon enough you can sometimes turn it back to "run" and save your starter:
When it's going on, you'll hear a kind of higher pitched rattling like stuff being tumbled around in a can. Also you might smell the hot electric smell even back in the driver's seat. Also, your dash lights will behave funny, as they do while you're cranking the starter, which in fact you're doing.
I ruined one starter despite knowing the above, and almost ruined another, on a car where I thought I had the sticking key thing under control.
