I pulled the black plastic piece off the clutch. I had to remove intercooler pipe, AMM lead back to Turbo, etc. Darn hard to get that plastic cover off! Wish I had the two hours of my life back!!
Did not seem to be any issue with how the starter hooked up to the flywheel.
So, I switched the ignition on to see. It started with all that stuff disconnected. The klack klack noise went away after 20 seconds. I think it was the valves getting used to running again and needed oil on them to quite them down.
I started it a couple of more times just to be sure. No smoking starter.
I put the black plastic piece back on (another rough job!). Then reassembled the pipes.
Saab is back together. On to the next little projects. This thing runs rough, so I really appreciate the smoothness of my little 8 valve (but that car took a few years to get it running right).
It is difficult to point to the cause of this issue because these cars seem to have a weird way of helping to fix themselves (only to be followed by breaking some other part). And then one ends up speculating on the this board.
But, I believe my ignition switch was gummed up and badly needed lubed and this fried my first and second starter. Once I cleaned the ignition tumbler with carb cleaner and WD 40 it became much looser, and the spring action came back to life. Without this spring action, the key stayed in the start mode thus keeping the starter engaged on the flywheel. I probably did not need to change the electric ignition switch but did anyway.
Moral of the story: get some cleaner and WD 40 and spray some in the ingnition key tumbler. Then move in the key in there to make sure the lock is in good shape.
I sure learned a lot from tearing out the ignition console and adjusting the stick shift, though!
