I cleaned out the key tumbler with WD 40. It was pretty stiff. Now the return spring works when you switch the key to the start mode, the point where the starter should engage.
However, I want to look at the flywheel and see how the starter is articulating with it. There may be something wrong with the alignment as that may be the source of the ''clack clack'' noise. The flywheel does seem to have small chew marks on it. I am not sure how else a starter can go into its hole where it is bolted; but maybe it is in there slightly off.
Anyway, I pulled out some pipes and am presently trying to get the darned black plastic cover off the clutch, so I can look at the flywheel and the starter gear. I had to give up yesterday out of frustration.
Way too difficult!!!!!
