Realistically, something will go wrong. You can't own any car without accepting that risk. But I agree with turbocon - go through the car exhaustively once you get it, stay on top of maintenance, and it will be as reliable as anything else. There is very little in these old simple cars that will spontaneously fail and leave you stranded, so as long as you pay attention and take care of noises/bad behavior in a timely manner, you will be totally fine. I would drive my '80 or '85 900 anywhere at a moment's notice.

Definitely take it to a mechanic - the primary thing you do NOT want to deal with on your new-to-you car is transmission failure, and a qualified Saab mechanic will be able to give you a good idea whether the transmission is in the early half of its life or its later. No transmission lasts forever, but Saab 5-speeds virtually always give warning before they fail, and failure is EXPENSIVE. Beyond that, it's all normal car stuff - rust, suspension, brakes, ignition, etc. If you're familiar with similar-vintage vintage Volvos you'll have a leg-up understanding the Bosch fuel injection and ignition system, so that's a plus. :)
