From my experience, it's the little things you can't foresee that kill you, like the ignition switch breaking--happened to me last week. Most other issues, like wandering idle, or squirrely suspension can be fixed when you have time--annoying, but you can usually still drive the car safely.
I redid all the suspension components and pulled and rebuilt the motor on mine last Fall so I was sure I wouldn't have an issue in the Winter. Drastic measures probably, but she's still running and riding reliably and beautifully.
