So Brad stuck weights in it from an 8V or other distributor? That guy should write a book. :-)
I haven't done it but I don't see why the earlier wiring couldn't be spliced in so that a round-plug dist. could be used. IIRC, the only difference (aside from the plug form factor) is that the earlier wiring used a wire mesh ground wire, whereas the later style used a standard wire.
I don't think you could easily swap plugs on the dist. because, again, IIRC, the spades inside the two connector styles are different: larger for round, smaller for square.
As noted above, this system is pretty darn crude. I know a guy who's modified a number of c900s with various flavors of non-stock engine control systems. He once told me that the best mod he ever did was to go to programmable timing control. The c900 timing helps make the engine doggy off-boost, and too conservative on-boost.
