If you crawl under your car and find where the shifter rod goes into the tranny,
OR
rip the interior center consol out, pull back the rubber boot wrapping around the shifter rod...
You'll see this funky rubber-containing joint in the middle of the shifter rod...called a dogbone.
If the rubber rips (and does after they're 20+years old), then you can only go in 3+4th.
Replacement is a bitch, as the set-screws holding them onto the rod are sometimes frozen. Cost is ~100 bucks. If the bolts come out easily, you can be done with the jobber in 2H.
