That's the short answer...
There are TWO major bolt patterns for the 99/90/900/9000 range.
Type A (for lack of a better name): For all 99s, all 90s and 900s up through MY 87, the pattern is 4x114.3 (AKA 4.5 inches), and the hubs have SAE studs and nuts to hold the wheels on.
Type B: For the 900 starting in MY 88, and all 9000s, the pattern is 4x108, and these hubs have metric threaded holes, and use lug bolts to hold the wheels on.
Type A can't normally be interchanged with Type B, or vice-versa. However, if one replaces the running gear on a 99, 90 or early 900 (time-consuming, but not hard), one can put the later (Type B) wheels on them. 9000s can never wear the Type A pattern wheels.
On a quick glance at a factory or Saab accessory catalog wheel, you can tell them apart by the addition of a "fifth" and smaller hole dead between two lug holes on the Type B wheels. This is for the locating stud on the hub, which also holds on the brake rotor. No fifth hole, it's the Type A pattern. Some wheel styles were made in both types (SPG or Aero, 15-spoke "Sunbursts"), so you need to know this. On the steel wheels, the later pattern wheels have four smaller holes between the actual lug holes. but often even the earlier steel wheels have holes like that for center cap clips, so it's not definitive.
There are other cautions, if you are dealing with Type A cars:
- The 75-80 99 & 900 have a completely different front hub arrangement from 1981-1987, which prevents the wheel center caps of wheels produced for the 81 & later cars to fit properly (1969-1974 99s are different again, but don't give us any problems fitting wheels...). But 81-87 steering knuckles and hubs can be fitted to 75-80 cars.
- Early EMS/GLE (Soccerball) wheels cannot be used on a 1981- car without being machined for the later centering method. They will not sit flat on the hub.
- Circa 1977-1980, different centering methods were used, which relied upon a washer of a specific size for a particular wheel being located under the CV/hub nut. If you change from Soccerballs to Incas, this is supposed to be changed as well.
I hope this answers your questions...
