I don't see the slave pushing too far and coming apart, with ring in or not. Ring doesn't do anything about limiting how far slave pushes and I can't see how it can push itself too far, it has a lot of potential travel.
Often, on a dissassembly of a car with perfectly working clutch hydraulics, you push the clutch in and use the slave cylinder to open up the pressure plate to permit putting the ring in. How can doing the same to remove the ring be risking overextending things?
So I think pushrodsaab has it a little wrong. And it's kind of a pain to pry that spacer ring out from under the fingers of the pressure plate, not to mention a chance of getting pinched, but you can do it if you want.
When I have done clutch work I have bled the slave, then used the functioning slave to remove the spacer ring. There is flat no such thing as being able to push the slave too far.
