Pushrodsaab,
Just to answer the Question, "Why would you remove the clutch if there was nothing wrong with it?"; To replace a leaky rear main seal, to replace a leaky clutch shaft seal, to replace a bad pilot bearing, to replace a transaxle or do anything that requires separating the engine/transmission, etc. Also, when a car has a bad slave I don't necessarily replace the clutch cover or disc with new ones. Only if they are worn, or nearly worn, out. Personally I remove and then replace good clutches all the time because I'm working on other jobs that require getting the clutch out of the way, like transmission R & Rs. Though I'm not sure if this is germane to the original post concerning a blown out slave, just answering the question.
