But Katie, this is not a fun job, in an area that's often totally filthy and very tight space, hard to see, hard to work, with a few tricks.
It's been so long since I did it I can't exactly tell you it all, but it can be complicated by the fact there are supposed to be soft rubber bushings mounting the alternator, and also mounting one end of the tensioning arm I guess you'd call it. But if they haven't been changed for a while they could be rock hard and could make it hard to do a good job replacing your belts (there are two, side by side and identical).
If you succeed at this you've earned your Saab Mechanic's A Rating star, in my book. Read all you can about it, on here by using the Search funcntion, and anywhere else you can find. Maybe Townsendimports web site? And definitely read the Bentley manual how-to.
Probably it's just the alternator belts that are bad, but turbocon's right that they can damage other things when they break. The overheating is probably only because without the belts the water pump itself is also not turning, not circulating coolant.
