As I said in my first post, the condition of the rubber bushings can make the job harder. It can mean the alternator is crooked relative to the line of the pulleys below it, and putting strain on the belts. This may ruin new belts too.
Changing the bushings is not a piece of cake so I'd still try to just change the belts first.
The townsendimports web site (townsendimports/Saabmaster Site/Enter/Technical Documents) has some pertinent info. Best on changing the belts is a section in the cooling system routines, under changing water pump, C900 to 1993/1994CV.
There's info on removing the alternator in the electrical system section.
If you have working air conditioning (or at least, still have an A/C belt on your car) you have to get the AC belt out of the way. Cut it if AC isn't working, or remove belt tensioner and slip it off.
That belt sits on a groove on the crank pulley that's outside of the belts you need to replace, so it has to come off.
You remove the adjusting arm from the alternator and take it right out of the way. And I think you also need to loosen the main swivel bolt for the alternator, so it can swing tighter-looser. I remember prying the alternator one way or the other, once its tensioning arm was removed so it could swivel, using a short block of 2x4.
And, before you put it all back together, recognize that you will have to run the tensioning screw looser to start than where it's sitting when you take it off. Then once it's on the car again with new belts on you'll be tightening it. So it makes sense, when it's off the car, to oil its threads and run it quite a ways in either direction, so it will turn easily when on the car and you have to tighten it.
Townsend makes it clear you shouldn't over tighten the belts. Should be able to push them about 1" in the middle of the longest section with your thumb, he says.
Get some help, plenty of rags, plenty of light, and a box of nitrile or latex or vinyl disposable gloves to protect your hands.
Oh, and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery before you start so there are no sparks to liven things up. And, you'll probably have to charge your battery once you're done, or at least hook up booster cables.
