Thanks Chris-- Yes, it's a green and white wire from the bundle that was disconnected. However, the Bentley wiring diagram shows that the the D+ lead runs (via a bulkhead connector) to the "charging lamp" in the instrument cluster and, as noted, the light was on with ignition in "run" position (but engine not running).
Notably, the charging light did NOT come on prior to onset of no-start condition. The first clue that something was wrong was a somewhat slow crank as I left the local hardware store then, some 5-10 minutes later, I noticed that the radio dropped power when I hit the brakes while approaching a stop and, oddly enough, the ABS light came on. Recognizing that as a symptom of charging failure, I cut the lights and heater fan and parked in a secure location. The car started quickly upon a jump-start provided by a friend, but after 5 min at idle the ABS light came on again and pressing the brake killed my radio. Thanks to AAA Plus coverage we (the FrankenSaab and I) got a ride home on and in a flatbed tow-truck and I'm able to work in my heated garage.
I pulled the voltage regulator, brushes look fine: ~1/2" or so and no obvious faults in the regulator per se. I'll reinstall in the morning and see if connecting the g/w wire fixes the problem. Before doing anything this eve I measured voltage at the battery at idle, got 12 volts even. IIRC, ~13.5 V is typical?
