However, I can think of a better use of Vasoline....I believe they suggested that as it saves a step to prime the pump gears as you don't have to remove the adapter. The gears are running in a lubed environment while they pull the oil up from the sump. Three bolts and the adapter is off, and you can squirt about a quarter of a cup of engine oil into the correct port.
If your engine hasn't been started in a long time, I would run oil up through the furthest hollow bolt in the head, and see that the upper end has oil supply prior to starting. Pull the fuel pump fuse, spark plugs and turn over the engine until you see the oil coming through the hollow bolt head. Look at Bentley and it will tell you the procedure.
