SP,
A few thoughts based on my personal C900 experience. Your symptoms aren't consistent with a bad FPR and the FPR really has only two (common) failure modes; 1) External leaking that you can see and 2) a defect in the diaphragm that lets gas be pulled through the small vacuum hose to the intake manifold. If there is no external leaking and you don't detect gasoline inside the vacuum hose then the FPR is almost certainly OK. All the bad FPRs I've dealt with were in cars that would (at least) idle. As for Fuel pressure from the pump, these pumps mostly run until they stop altogether and until that happens the car will (at least) idle so I'm suggesting that you save your money on the test gauge. That's true whether you have a two pump system or the later single pump. When the pre-pump fails in the early two pump system the main pump will run the car but usually the first symptom of a bad feed pump is the engine cutting out while making long left curves when low on fuel. To detach the FPR just unclamp and carefully remove the rubber hose from the nipple on the bottom. Get the clamp out of the way, grab the hose gently with pliers and give it a little twist to free it up and then use a screwdriver to push it off the nipple. If you don't disturb the hard plastic hose lower down you won't have a problem. I'm not saying that you absolutely can't have a bad FPR or a pump that's making low pressure just that those are not likely to be causing your previously stated symptoms. You'd probably be better off to do some pin testing on the ECU. It's probably just failing to energize the main relay for more than a few seconds.
