There was discussion about the reason they did it this way quite a while ago. The general consensus was that it was there to prevent icing. I don't think that conclusion is correct.
IMO, the heater line inside the PCV hose is there to prevent moisture condensation and ingestion of water droplets by the turbo. Two things could happen. Neither scenario is especially good.
- If a droplet of water hits the hot blades of the turbo, the metal develops spot shrinkage where it hits and evaporates. Eventually the metal of the turbo blades will fatigue and fail.
- Since the turbo is turning very quickly (IIRC 100k RPM max) water droplets hitting the aluminum turbo blades will cause erosion of the blades just from the change in momentum of the water droplet as it impacts the spinning turbo. Eventually the turbo will become unbalanced.
In either case, the turbo will eventually fail.
