The ONLY way to remove that part of the trans case is to pull out the lay shaft which lets the cluster gear drop down out of the way. You will find that the fastest, way to fix this gearbox is to pull out the whole engine-trans unit, remove the rear diff plate,inner drivers and chunk (ring gear) so you can easily get to the lay shaft locking bolt, and pull out the lay shaft from the rear. Clutch and flywheel have to come out so you are realistically looking at rebuilding the whole gear box. Sorry. It's a lot easier to replace the whole thing with a "new" rebuilt unit.
