I've seen no evidence that the later 1989/90 gears are any stronger than the pre-'89 gears*. You can't use the 1989/90 cluster and mainshaft gears with pre-1989 reverse gears though. You sort of need to use either all pre-'89 gears (reverse, cluster and mainshaft) or all 1989/90 gears. Those gears will go on either an early or late pinion shaft of course.
Since you will need to use an early (pre-'89) case to accept your custom pinion bearing housing (or you'll have to make a sleeve to put it in a late case) be aware that the 1989/90 layshaft is about 0.003" of an inch bigger diameter where the 1989/90 style rear cluster bearing fits and is a tight fit in the hole in the case bulkhead. It can be driven in but it's cringy and probably worth doing a little reaming. Be sure to install that layshaft from the rear, it won't fit through the counter gear inner race (in the front case).
Another tip/observation: The loose rollers in the counter gear were changed from 13 (early) to 15 in 1989 and a different inner race was used. If you attempt to put a late counter gear in an early front case you will need to grind out some aluminum since the rim of the late inner race is broader. If you are using the input shaft with the extra 6303 ball bearing on it's tip you'll be fine as those are all early components. You probably want a solid front motor mount and I may have a spare front cover like you'll need, let me know.
* The 1989 third mainshaft gear was found to have some problem (don't ask me?) and in mid 1989 Saab changed that gear and the cluster. That's the only difference between a 1989 and 1990 unit. A bulletin was issued and the replacement parts were made available.
A few months ago I passed on a FREE 1948 Hendey 16 by 30 lathe in excellent condition. Didn't have a good way to move it. Boo hoo!
