All right, sounds like a plan! Thanks again for your help.
I also need to build up an '89 box with all the good '89-'90 parts I have. A friend wants to buy one from me. So that works out perfect. I'll be out from under at least half the '89-'90 stuff, and I can use older stuff to build mine.
The transmission in the car isn't on its last legs, but my second gear is crunchy. I know what a good one feels like and this ain't it! Now's the time to build a replacement. Would rather replace it on my terms, not in an emergency!
Meant to say, that Hendey lathe looks the business! The American Pacemaker I was using is only a little bit bigger/newer. Turning on something that big is exciting, in the same way riding a horse or operating an antique farm-tractor is exciting. You could definitely get on the wrong side of a heavy and strong beast, if you do something wrong. That kind of exciting.
Here's the dipstick adapter, along with stock 4sp and stock 5sp ones. Made it out of high-strength 4130 steel on the Hardinge HLV toolroom lathe, and then milled the wrench flats on a Bridgeport. Also made a copper crush washer. The walls are pretty thin, to maximize flow through it, and the dipstick can easily fit without hanging up inside. The thread is 3/4-20, I think I remember. Way easier than trying to TIG weld a filler cap onto an oil-soaked valve cover.
