Old pre-'89 gears sound like the correct way, then.. I will use the 4sp reverse gear along with them.
I'm using a chillcast 4sp case anyway. I enlarged the engine oil dipstick port in it (pic attached) and machined a fitting to adapt it to the 5sp dipstick/filler tube. The fitting is thin-walled enough and the bore is large enough that I will be able to avoid having to weld a bung onto the valve cover for filling the engine oil. I have a nice finned side plate for it, too.
I have a bunch of front cases and primary housings. The front case I have with the extra bearing is equipped for a hydraulic motor mount. Is this a bad thing?
I've never had a hydraulic mount. I was just going to go with the hydraulic. I'm not planning to make huge power, I just like building things up the "right" way. I've seen people make solid hockey-puck-style mounts to replace the hydraulic ones. I guess I could do this.
Finally, I could also make a U-joint shifter coupling. Unsure if it's necessary or even advantageous. I have an old 99 U-joint (came with the 4-speed) which has seen better days. I could weld a clamp onto it so it would clamp to the shaft. I could also buy a double-U-joint or a single and adapt it. Any thoughts on whether or not a U-joint is better than the stock shifter coupling?
