Guess I shoulda known that others use balance shafts, but Saab is the only car I've owned that uses them (didn't they pioneer balance shafts?). I have a VERY hard time believing that it takes 14 HP to turn a couple of small counterweighted shafts with a chain and some gears. Heck, an AC compressor does some serious work, and they only take, what 20 HP? Claims of 15 to 20% better mileage sound far-fetched as well. I would think the performance/mileage gain of removing the balance chain would be about the same as replacing your catalytic converter with a straight pipe (and in my experience, whatever that gain is, it's negligible).
