"After all, no one else uses balance shafts, and you don't see everyone else's engines flying apart."
that's not true. a fair number of current engines use balance shafts: most are "large" 4 cylinders including Saturn's 2.2l, Nissan's 2.5l, Chrysler/Dodge 2.2L, GM's 2.4l Quad 4 and some sixes like Audi's 3.0l V6.
i'm not sure what the logic is to NOT renewing the chain on the balance shafts. the majority of the cost in doing a timing chain is in the labor to get to the chain, which you'd have to do to remove the chain anyways. compared to the entire job, the cost of the balance shaft parts (chain, guides, sprockets) seems reasonable. the smoothness of the 2.3 over the 2.0 seems justification enough for keeping the shafts.
one reason i could see for unhooking them is increased horsepower. i heard claims from some turbo tuners that removing the balance shafts from a Chrylser 2.5l Turbo frees up 14hp. anyone know if this applies to our favorite 2.3l?
