I certainly remember riding a '78 Honda motorcycle with balance shafts. Japanese bikes tend to incorporate new engine technology before it makes its way into cars. This may be because, in comparison with motorcycle buyers, car buyers are rather a conservative lot.
Motorcycles also typically cover fewer miles and don't seem to have to meet the same expectations for reliability as cars do.
