Terry,
Seems you got the same symptoms as I have on the 95 V6 Griffin. Not that I worry about it. The light goes on every now and then, but furthermore all just works fine......hmm, didn't do that 'gravel-test'. The V6 does not have the sharp acceleration of the 2.3T, so wheelspin under normal conditions will very seldomly ocurr.
Tom owns a 92 or 93 CSET, like my other car, I guess, and these are notorious for their problems with the non-switchable TCS.
The 95 V6 cannot go into limp as far as I know, and my manual confirms this. It also states the switch to defeat the system, but only as an option. Hence I do not worry too much.
Maybe there is a difference in the type, I do have a European/Continental version of the 95 V6 Griffin. I do not know whether there are significant differences with USA or UK types.
BTW, I assume you refer to the red TCS CTRL led indicating a fault, not to the orange one coming on when the system is activated and works fine.
No, I would not go for the (very expensive) dealer repair myself either, also because I do not trust their knowledge of the system too much. They failed to repair the TCS of my '92 CSET on several occasions, and now cannot come up with something better than replace the whole system for a couple of grand. But as a matter of course it could pay off just to have it connected to the SAAB diagnosis while you're there for regular maintenance. Who knows, a reset just might help.....
