I've seen autoboxes die at 80K miles - I bought a car where the tranny had just been replaced at 75K. I sold the car at about 150K with the tranny going strong.
I would say the average life of a 9000 automatic is about 100K miles. Some more, some less. Seeing as the car you're looking at has 76K on the transmission, and the V6 has more torque than the four cylinder, I would be concerned about tranny life.
A rebuilt tranny can be had for about $2500 installed. That's getting one from Eriksson and having it installed by a competent independent. If you otherwise want the car, use this as a bargaining point, and build it into the price of the car. With an average of 25K before the tranny *might* need work, getting $2000 off the price would be reasonable.
If the tranny does need replacement in 25K (about 180K miles), you're set, as you've built that into the price. If you don't need tranny work, you're ahead of the game.
Other questions - this is a V6, so when was the last time the timing belt was replaced? Lose that, and a tranny is the least of your worries. Next, what are your plans for the car? In 46K miles, it will hit 200K. I'm sure that there are other things to consider - engine, suspension, brakes - all which need work after many miles. If you're looking for a car to put 100K trouble-free miles on, don't look at a car with 154K now. Spend the extra $$ to get a lower mileage car. Less trouble, and less maintenance cost.
If you're just looking for an about-town runner that won't see more than 10K miles a year, then a high-mileage car is OK, assuming it's cheap.
Good luck!
