As you know, anything mechanical can fail at any time. Hving said that, if the transmission has been well treated up until now, and if the fluid looks good, it can last a long time. If the fluid hasn't been changed regularly, change it now--either once completely, or 3-4 pan drains.
If the current fluid looks at all off color, change it with non-synthetic first, then go to synthetic ATF. If the fluid looks good now, just go with synthetic.
If you go with synthetic, dumping the pan every 45-50,000 miles should be fine. If you don't, or won't, use synthetic, change what is in the pan at least every 15,000 miles.
While you are at it, it would be a good idea to change the power steering fluid, too. And I'd check the final drive to make sure it isn't leaking (and I'd change that to 75W-90 synthetic gear lube).
My 1985 900T has almost 200,000 on the automatic now. 1988 9KT only has about 125,000---changed tranny fluid when I bought it with 87K on it.
