As you can see, life varies Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Tue, 26 Mar 2002 11:56:13 In Reply to: Auto trans life < 80k miles??, Tony Wirtel, Mon, 25 Mar 2002 13:35:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You have documentation of an early failure (less than 80K). As you've read many folks have long-lived trannies.
No question, frequent fluid changes can help extend the life of the tranny. That is something to check on the car you're looking at. If the fluid hasn't been changed regularly since the rebuild at 78K, assume shorter life.
I stand by my assertion that you should factor into the price replacing the tranny every 100K miles or so. Treat it well, change the fluid regularly, and with luck you'll have the same good results others have had. But my experience, and the experience of others have shown that even with good treatment, some trannies die sooner, around 100K miles. In terms of picking a used car to buy, and what price to pay for it, assuming a limited tranny life is sound, sober judgement.
Good luck!
