Cold running is more harmful to your car than high temperature running provided you have a well maintained cooling system. Fuel vaporizes better parts fit better, less wear and lubrication works more efficiently - the engine maintains itself much better and remains much cleaner as a result of operation above the boiling point of water. It is when the cooling system isn't maintained well that hot spots develop and head gaskets go then you are in trouble. Installing a colder thermostat to cure a heating problem is just postponing the enevitable coolant failure and engine problems. So be fore warned before you install cold thermostat. Saab went to the "dumb" gage around late 94 or 95 so they could operate the engines hotter (to meet environmental laws) without exciting the owner/drivers with the temp hovering just below the red band. I personally prefer the old gage which was a direct reading gage and moved full range -then one could "see" cooling system performance and fan operations
