joe,
i just switched my 95 9000CS (105K) over to mobil 1, from pennzoil. take this for what it's worth, but here's my two cents.
i have a friend who i trust very much with my car; he works at a garage, and while he's not saab specific, he knows his stuff. we changed my oil at the garage since he has a lift.
anyway, he told me that if i simply drained the old fossil oil out and poured the new Mobil 1 in, the old stuff would burn out, but he'd change the new Mobil at 3K to get the mixed-up fossil and synth outta there. then he'd put in new MObil and go 5-7K (any less than 5K and you're throwing away your $$- and Mobil IS about 2X as expensive as most fossil oils).
BUT there was also the option of him putting a thinner in my engine to thin out the fossil oil, letting it drain, and THEN putting in Mobil and going for 5-7K, so that's what i did. we put the thinner in (ran me 5 bucks) let the old oil drain for an hour (NO more could come outta there...) and then put in the mobil.
he had one last word of caution for a friend of mine who was with us who has an older car with 183K on it, so i thought you might benefit from it too: if your engine burns any oil now, be careful, because apparently Mobil 1 WILL NOT BURN... so if your engine has cracks or leaks that are causing fossil to burn off... well, the mobil will leak through the cracks a bit, too, and it has to go SOMEWHERE, maybe it'll foul the plugs, maybe worse, he didn't know. (granted, my friend's honda is burning 2 quarts every 3K.) by the same token, if your engine's in great shape, or even if there's a MINOR leak, Mobil claims that their full synth will help stop and prevent oil loss.
hope that helps.
