I had just changed the spark plugs a day or two earlier, and surmised that I didn't tighten them enough! Sure was scary when it happened though, what with the sudden total loss of power, especially seeing how I was about 150 miles from home. As fate would have it, I didn't have any tools with me, but fortunately, there was a hardware store nearby. I screwed the plug in as tight as I could by hand, that got me to the hardware store to buy a spark plug socket wrench. :)

Since it has been three years since the plugs were changed on your Mom's car, I think we can safely assume they were tight enough to begin with. I personally have never heard of this happening for any other reason, so I can't begin to speculate on what else might cause it. Aluminum engines have been de-facto in Hondas for decades, so I don't think it's a 'feature' of that particular construction.
