What I assumed is a switch (mainly because my mechanic called it thus) is located on the body of the compressor itself. It does control the clutch because jumping around it allows the clutch to actuate and the compressor to run. It has two wires, one wire comes from a large red connector, the other goes to a male bullet type and disappears into a harness. Regarding charge, as I recall we put 2.something pounds in after vacuuming it out. Low charge was not an issue so we assumed it was a safety over-ride to shut it down in the case of either too much heat or not enough pressure (as you say they are related 1:1) and it was stuck/broken. Since we knew it was neither overheating nor underpressure we jumped past it and it works fine. I did promise to hit the ECON if the temp coming from the vents changed markedly (I keep a taylor thermo in it permanently, never enough guages.)
