The 3000 mile interval legend comes from the days way back (like the 50's) and the quick oil-change outfits that make outrageous amounts of money convincing folks they need to change their oil that often just to make their car survive to 100K miles. I've had a bunch of cars (40+) over the years many that went well over 100K. I even have a '90 Volvo 744T that now has 225K miles and a '96 9K at 174K kms; all of these which have had their oil/filter changed to the recommended interval. I've also lived in a wide variety of climates from South Carolina to Northern Ontario, Nova Scotia to Ohio. Short, daily distances and long, extended marathon drives. And believe it or not, I've NEVER, NEVER had a problem related to dirty oil.
There is definitely a reason that Yanks are the biggest consumer of oil products in the world and its because they believe con-artists who will play to these old and out-dated myths.
