>> ... unless, as Dick suggests, non-synthetic oils available in the US are junk compared to what's available here in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

I was always under the impression that fossil oil is fossil oil, here or in Europe, as marketed by the major manufacturers--but I have no evidence to back that view.

>> None of the cars I've ever owned had a manufacturer-recommended oil change interval less than 12000 miles.

In the '60's and '70's the usual interval recommended by the manufacturer was 6k, with filter changed every other oil change. I seem to recall my C900T's ('82 and '83 w/ oil-cooled turbo) having a 3750-mile oil change recommendation, but that is a faint memory. My present '95 Aero has a 10k recommendation with no spec for either fossil or synthetic. Personally, I wouldn't run fossil oil anywhere near 10k miles if I was keeping the car for many years. What is for sure is that popular tradition and culture in the U.S. dictates that oil be changed every 3k. This is evidenced by commercials once seen for Jiffy Lube or other fast-oil-change chain that oil should be changed earlier than specified by the manufacturer. My speculation has always been that manufacturer recommendations are skewed toward longer intervals in the interest of conservation, or at least the image thereof.

I have contacts at the Exxon refinery here (Baton Rouge, LA), and I'll ask about any quality differences that may occur between oil marketed here and overseas. Like gasoline, apparently oil is more expensive in Europe, so perhaps it is forumulated better to allow longer change intervals. I don't know, but I'll try to find out.

> I believe there are some cars on the UK market now that have oil changes specified at 25K or 30K miles.

I'm not aware of any cars sold here in the U.S. that have anywhere near a recommendation that long.

>> By way of comparison, 5 litres (about 5.5 US quarts) of a good quality mineral oil (i.e. non-synthetic) would cost about £20-£25 (US$30-$32) in the UK. The same volume of synthetic (Mobil 1) costs around £30 (US$45).

Hmmm...good fossil oil (e.g., Castrol GTX) can be purchased here for about $1.50 at Walmart, maybe less on sale. Mobil 1 is ~$4.00 per quart, while blends are in the $2.50 range, I think. Boutique synthetics exist, like Royal Purple and Amsoil, that cost more--some of the racing oils costing $9+ per quart. Some brands are also available in 5-gal. pails, which are of course cheaper per unit.

>> As a benchmark, my UK-spec '96 Aero costs me about £35 (US$50) every 12000 miles in synthetic oil and filters.

I spend about US$26.50 per oil change for the oil (Royal Purple, ~$3.50/qt. purchased by the pail) and a Delco synthetic-fiber filter ($9) every eight or nine months (10k miles). Possible stupid question: Are miles the same in the UK as in the States (5280 ft/mile)?
