I was in the same position last year and elected to buy my son a '93 9000 primarily for safety reasons. Lots of deer around here and the roads are dark and curvy. I had also looked hard at a Maxima, but thought that the Saab would be a nicer car and might hold up better in the long term. Paid quite a bit more than $2K for it, but have since seen lots '93s around here for $3K-or-so (just bought a nicely maintained '93 turbo 5 speed for myself for less than $3K).
Three months ago my son took out Bambi a few miles from the house with the 9000. After replacing the grill and bending the nose back into shape the car is back in presentable condition. Not sure how the Maxima would have held up...
The only significant mechanical problem has been a fuel pump which cost me $80 and a few hours to diagnose and replace, but I still wouldn't have bought the Saab if I hadn't known he'd be going to the local university and wouldn't be commuting long distances hundreds of miles from here. In that situation, I'd have gone with a Maxima or Camry ...
