I think safety should be the number one concern. You can replace a car, after all. I would agree that this particular car should be avoided, even if free. Deferred maintenance, a polite term for no maintenance, is a very bad sign. It means that the owner was capable of ignoring an obvious problem. In an older car, there will be many more problems lurking.
Look instead for complete service records. The kind of owner that saved every service or part receipt. Replaced items should be sprinkled out over the last few years. A huge amount of work done every few years means that the owner put up with problems for awhile before finally giving in.
Finally, the high price of dealer parts for Saabs should not be a deterrent. I hardly ever buy from the dealer, and I save gobs of money. I've also learned to do much of my own work. This started out as a need due to poverty, and I continue because I like it and I know that I can believe what the mechanic says about what was done.
