Over filling the oil isn't normally harmful in an engine damaging sense. What does hapen, however, is that the crankshaft hits the oil which increases parasitic power loss and can froth up the oil, just like in a blender. In theory, the oil can get frothed to the point that the pick up is just sucking foam, leading to low oil pressure. This is more likely to hapen at high RPM. I've never seen this hapen personally, but if lowering your oil level solves the problem then is probably what hapened. Did the light come on at idle or high RPM? Either way, it is dificult to tell how much, if any, damage was done. The amount of oil pressure nessasary to keep the light off is still woefully inadequate at high RPM. Still, if you didn't hear the lifters clattering like crazy, I'd say the amount of damage was minimal. Are you sure the pressure sensor is functioning correctly, perhaps you jsut damaged the wiring during a repair?
