flickering was because the shaft was whipping your oil into a foamy lather. This puts a lot of air into the lube pickup pump system. With the kind of pump the Saab uses foam will give a flickering light wghere a straight gear won't. You probably haven't done too much damage if the cam followers haven't complained. BUT can't be positive, the 4 banger is a solid engine and will take a lot of punishment.
There isn't any simple inspection to determine bearing condition. lets just hope you caught it soon enough. I believe the worst condition will be oil seal failures and leaks at the main and clutch seals. look for these if found wash out and monitor carefully PLEASE WATCH THOSE OIL CHANGES- 4.5 LITRES.
