JasonS, all of the above being taken into consideration, your last question hits the nail on the head. There IS something wrong. The headlights are NOT suposed to dim, you are NOT suposed to feel like you are suddenly running into a headwind everytime the AC comes on. There is something wrong. As Ari says, this is an indication that you have a problem somewhere. Yes, the AC compressor puts a big hit on the engine when it kicks in, this is true, but a properly operating engine comensates for this instantly. You can hear the AC compressor come on, but that should be the only indication you have. If the lights are dimming at night you have a problem somewhere. I feel like a broken record here as I have said this before, but imagine trying to sell a new car that did this. Ridiculous, right? Well a SAAB in good shape, turbo or not, doesn't do this. It is NOT normal. If everything else (battery, alternator, voltage regulator, wiring to AC clutch, AIC valve) is in good shape, then the AC compressor or clutch is putting way too much of a load on the engine and is not long for this world. Please excuse the rant, I'll climb down off my soapbox now. Just please don't think that "all SAABs do this"
