Eric, I don,t know how much more this subject is worth, but. . Of course you are right, "the bottom line is the dimming is caused by a voltage drop in the wiring". My point is only that this is not right. Something is wrong somewhere. What's causing the voltage drop? Corosion? Leakage through tired wire insulation? Worn alternator? Tired voltage regulater? AIC valve not compensating the idle quickly enough? What's the milage on the car? Mechanical things wear out. I don't know what is wrong, only that something is wrong somewhere. It just doesn't make any sense to me that it is "normal", or was there when the car was built. The car wouldn't have made it off the lot otherwise. Would you buy a new car that did this? Would you try to sell a new car that did this? Of course not. Yes, there is going to be a voltage drop when any load is put on the engine, and it should be measurable, but it should not be so significant that it dims the headlights. Also, I think the original complaint here included a feeling that the car was hitting a 60 MPH headwind when the AC came on. This is another indication that something, somewhere is not right. As was pointed out in the several posts above, a good thing to suspect would be a compressor taking too much power to spin. One of the dangers in accepting that this condition is "normal" is that if the compressor seizes, it could take out the serpentine belt and leave you 700 mile from East Nowhere without a paddle. I am reminded of the extremely common remarks about the classic 900s, "they all run hot", "it's normal for the guage to run up near the red". I fact, when the milage nears 100,000 on these cars, they often needed a complete cooling system replacement, from radiater to water pump to hoses and when this was done, there was the needle, right where it should be, dead on 9 o'clock. Sorry, I seem to have climbed back up on my soapbox. Well, it's all in good faith, thanks for your remarks.
