headlights and driving lights

So last night while hauling ~500 lbs of manure home from home depot in the old 9000 I realized that one of my front headlights had burned out (The phrase "How much crap can this thing carry?" ran through my mind while loading up the car). Now I remember Cannonball telling me that the Canadian 9000's had excellent headlights. That certainly isn't the case with my '87 9000. The headlights are horrible and though I could drive to a canadian junkyard, The 9 hour trip really isn't worth it to me and I'd rather not spend a bundle buying a whole new set of lights and lenses.
I want to improve the whole setup and I want to be cheap. Could I just buy a more powerful set of light bulbs like I would with the lamp on my desk? Is the brightness a function of the bulb you use or the lens the bulb is set into? Or in different words, how is the Euro spec light system different from the crappy american system.
The other option would be to install a set of auxillary driving lights. Has anyone done this? What are the best recomendtions?
NT
The new brakes are fabulous - just a little squeaking that I attribute to the break-in period.
