At 276k miles, I have no doubt going stock rubber on both front and rear on my car would have been a huge improvement. Based on others' comments here, I went poly in the rear only, and definitely notice my car doesn't understeer as much as it used to. Who is to say that I really needed poly in the rear to achieve the results I wanted? But, I like the philosophy of only doing things once, since I for the most part pay others to work on my car, so going poly at this juncture made the most sense for me.
I wouldn't say poly is strictly for high performance though. I think any improvement that gives a car better handling is well applied to any car, though I'll grant you that massive understeer may be the safest option for the SUV/truck driving American public.
I think neutral handling is the best, once you get used to it. :)
