Did you get a second opinion at Scanwest? Your car has what, less than 110,000 miles, right? Now I realize the 2.3l engine is a lot more complex than my 2.0l, but come on, mine made it 256,000 without EVER being opened. I don't think Saab reduced longevity THAT much, such that you need what amounts to the cost of putting in a used engine (as SteveB mentioned) from another car.
By the way, the used engine I had put in my car had more miles on it (barely) than yours does now!
Your car shouldn't be prone to having the non hardened chain sprockets, as has been mentioned here, because it's a '93. So, unless the previous owner serious abused the engine... ie only changed the fossil oil ever 10,000 miles, gave it full boost every morning before the engien warmed up, etc, I can't imagine why it should need such drastic and extensive work now.
Didn't you mention you have communicated with David Prantl before? He's as good an expert as anyone I can think of (outside of here!), on the 9K.
I don't think the price is really out of hand, remembering from some other bills I've seen at Scanwest. The parts are pricey, and it's a big job.
