AC gages and capillary tubing

Thanks for all the feedback so far. I really appreciate the help. Tomorrow I have time to do more tests at 1500 rpm. The instructions with the gages said to turn the knobs by the gages 1 1/2 turn to get a reading. Should I not turn them? I'll see what happens if I don't turn them.
Robert, in your posts you mention replacing the exp. valve many times. Were these new ones? Are they frequently bad? On mine the capillary tubes are quite long and have some loops in them. I placed the sensor "spiral" against the tube coming out of the evaporator as far down as I could get it, but I'm not quite sure where to leave the loops. I replaced the evaporator filter, the condensor doesn't look dirty, but I could run a hose over it.
I completely agree with the post of not going back to a place that has twice left me without a working AC. I went there because I can walk back home, and they seemed capable. My opinion has changed, and I want to learn to do AC myself. It is pretty much the only car related mechanical operation I don't do myself.
