I have purchased a car for my father - a '96 9000 CSE 2.0 LPT auto with 99K miles and full Saab service history. It is a lovely car and runs well. However, I have no experience of working on the auto transmission (I have never owned one before), even though I have driven them and know enough to know that this one is currently working well. Add to this the fact that I will be maintaining this car for him and that he lives too far away (with water in between) for me to bring it back to my own garage. His services will be performed in his own driveway or garage.

I reckon he'll be driving this car for five or six years (if all goes to plan), putting maybe 30K miles on it in that period. I'll be giving it a service and a good going over for things the dealer won't have done like suspension bushes, A/C clutch air gap, etc., before handing it over to him.

Apart from the obligatory transmission fluid flush and change, with filter, is there anything I should do now while I have it in my garage? Attention to the valve body maybe, since it was suggested? Or should I just change the fluid and filter and leave well alone in the knowledge that any problem will give warning signs?

I am already planning to change the fluid and filter on every service (probably once a year and every 5-6K miles). Ed's 89 9KT suggested an additive for smoother shifting?
