I always measure the volume of fluid (ATF or any other fluid) when I change it. This gives me an idea if I am losing any through any mechanism that needs to be addressed mechanically.
There is no question that more than 3.3 liters (litres) can be drained from the 4HP-18 transmissions - regardless of year. The metal seal that is often referred to on this BB is for the ca. 1" dia. 8 mm hex socket plug on the differential part of the housing. There is about a pint of fluid that stays in the differential side of the case when the only drain is the fliter cover.
I really don't know if SAAB actually changed the housing or if they just changed the dipstick markings, but there is no question for my two '96 9K points of reference that the drained volume is in excess of 4 liters.
