Based on your advice and my own thoughts, here is my conclusion:
1) Since my dad won't be thrashing it, and it's going well now, it has a good chance of survival. He does have a little trailer (I mean a little 6'x4' thing that he uses to carry DIY stuff), but I can't see that being a problem.
2) Although fluid and filter changes once a year (5-6K miles) might be overkill, they won't do any harm since I don't mind doing it. Too often is better than not often enough. I should give it a good flush at the outset.
3) Additives are probably not necessary, and might upset operation of the gearbox a little.
4) Opening it up to change seals as a preventative measure might do more harm than good. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
5) I need to keep the radiator and transmission cooler clean and unobstructed.
I'm feeling a lot more comfortable with the thought of running this car now. It seems that even though it is an auto, it has a fighting chance of surviving its assignment. And I'll be able to gain a little DIY experience with the auto to boot.
