There are those rare few who walk through life without fear. They seem incapable of knowing fear, rather than simply being ignorant of danger. It is enticing to think that the complete incomprehension of fear creates a teflon zen that protects those lucky few from harm. I have seen this teflon zen in the movies, and I wish that I had it. In real life, the fearless few I have known have pretty much ended up without their heads.
I am not immunized from fear, so I know for certain that there is no teflon zen in my future. Being forced to live with fear, I would prefer to know what I should be afraid of, rather than denying fear through ignorance.
Here's a test. When you cross the middle of that busy street, cigarette dangling from your lips, beer in one hand, headed to the whorehouse with the roulette wheel on the other side, close your eyes. If you are mythically carried to the other side of the street unharmed, we will have circumstantial evidence that the teflon zen exists. If, instead, someone with rubber gloves is picking you out of a bus grill with a screwdriver, then either you were not fear-free enough, or Francis Ford-Coppola made up that whole teflon zen thing.
To remain on-topic, let me put this in Saab 9000 terms: Don't change your transmission fluid for the next 5 years and let us know how it works out. Then we can ask "Did your transmission fail only because you learned here that it could." The "tree falling in the forest" guys will love that one.
