Still could be the battery - here's why...

A battery fails in two ways. The first is the resistance increases due to the irreversible deposition of thick insulating layers of lead sulfate. When this happens, the electrolye density and conductivity decreases and the battery will not take a charge.
The second mode of failure is for the plates to short out. This can occur either by the plates warping under heat, or by conducting deposits falling off and settling in the bottom of the battery, shorting the plates.
In the former case, which is the more common, the jump provides extra voltage to reverse the electrochemical deposition process and works just like the alternator. Since the internal battery resistance is initially high, the current flow is limited, so the battery cables do not heat excessively.
In the second case, when the plates are shorted, the internal battery resistance is low and the charging current draw is very high, leading to iR heating in the cables and battery. This sounds like what you are experiencing.
Replacing the battery would be what I would do in this situation before I resigned myself to pay for a SAAB service.
