Did you get a test light or meter yet? You'll need it to figure out whats causing your problem. Most common cause of this seems to be the temperature switch mounted on the side of the compressor. Unfortunatly, repairing it correctly is beyond most DIYers due to the large outlay for tools ($300-$400 minimum for service manifold gauge and vacume pump)
What you can do is check for power (12 volts) getting to the compressor from the car. Coming out of the big engine compartment wire harness is a single wire (blue, I think) going through a connector to the switch on the side of the compressor. The connector should be 3 or 4 inches from the switch. Right next to that wire on the switch is another wire that carries the electricity over to the clutch/pulley. What you need to do is check the electricity on each side of the switch. In the case of a test light, hook the clip on the handle to the negative (-) terminal on the battery. Touch the pointed probe of the light to the positive(+) terminal of the battery to make sure the light works. Bulbs do go out, amazing how many people forget. Now work the probe into the connection between the switch wire and car wire. Start the car and see if the light goes on and off with the compressor. I'm guessing it won't But post back if it is cycleing and we'll go from there. If it is not cycling, Move the pointed probe to the connection between the switch and the clutch. Is the light cycling now? If not, your clutch windings are bad, that CAN be DIY'd. If the light is cycling, you have found a symptom, and maybe the cause.
Now would come descion time. Do you want to invest in the tools to do it right (minimum of a service manifold gauge $60-$140) or turn it over to a pro with the knowledge of whats going on. Without the manifold gauge you can't determine if: overcharged, bad switch, or compressor overheating due to internal failure.
The only other hope would be if you had any documented service on the A/C system. Some would say let a little refrigerant out, but then its real easy to have no A/C,so you add some with the cheap kit and go to far and you can ruin an otherwise good compressor.
Lots of help available to learn to DIY A/C, but without the right tools I would not recommend it to anybody, I make more money fixing other peoples screwups than plain old broke cars. I also hate fixing other peoples screwups worse than just plain fixing cars, cause that means some poor soul is putting out the money more than once.
In the link below is a seiko compressor. The switch is the black plastic sticking out on the right side, the exact switch location may vary.
